Another major concern that people have across the area is anti-social behaviour.

First some reassurance.  In surveys that I have conducted all over the constituency, people generally indicate that they do not fear being victims of crime. That isn’t to say that there isn’t any crime but there can be no doubt that we are lucky to live in an area where crime is generally low.

What people do see as a problem is low level nuisance which, occasionally, can become a real problem for those living close to the hotspots.

There are examples of this from all over the constituency:  Jubilee Field off Catherington Lane, Peel Park in Clanfield, Westbrook play area and Cowplain recreation ground, the shop on the corner of Kings Mede and Catherington Lane, recreation areas in Whiteley, the Square in Bishops Waltham.

Complaints range from noise, to litter, vandalism and graffiti. All are a real issue for those living close by. Of course there are many reasons and remedies.

My time out with the police suggests that a lack of parental responsibility is a problem.  While understanding that, particularly in what now appear to be increasingly difficult financial times, there is a huge pressure on parents to be out earning a living, there are small numbers of parents who, even when at home, prefer to push their children out of the house.  Dealing with this will never be easy.

There is also a clear lack of facilities for younger people.  This is widely recognised across all three of the councils that make up the constituency but finding solutions is never easy and always costly.

Ultimately it will always end up that local police are the final step in the search for a solution but this will never solve the long term problem and, in any event, tends only to shift the problem to new locations.
