Fighting for Meon Valley
I believe that Britain needs change, not more of the same.

Traffic and Speeding
These two issues are, of course, quite separate.
The amount of traffic generated clearly reflects the amount of development in an area and economic prosperity.
It is absolutely clear that the enormous amount of development planned in or around the Meon Valley is going to hugely increase traffic volumes which is why Government must listen to all of us who are demanding that Infrastructure be provided ahead of development.
It is also where deliberations on the Local Development Framework can make a real difference. If we carefully plan for the next twenty years and recognise that more high quality local employment can reduce commuting, we may well all be better off.
As for speed, this remains a difficult nut to crack. There is some room for schemes like “Twenty is Plenty” and “Home Zones”; some room for increased enforcement and some room for innovative approaches like that being considered at West Meon where changes in road layout and a promotion of “place” signals (like footpaths visually painted across roads) can ignite an innate caution in drivers.
There has recently been a crackdown on speeding in the area.
Officers concentrated on the A32 between Fareham and Alton, the B2177 Southwick to Wickham, and A272 Winchester to Petersfield, which all have high casualty rates and many local complaints of motorcyclists riding dangerously through villages with 30mph limits. The operation ran over four weekends in May, July, August and September 2009 and targeted motorbikes and cars. Five people reported for summons to court for driving without due care and attention, and 32 for speeding. Six motorcyclists were given warnings for anti-social riding. 510 fixed penalty notices were issued: 493 for speeding, 10 for contravening traffic signals, four for no insurance and three for use of a mobile phone. A further 326 motorists were referred for driver awareness training.
Ultimately this last issue is of course down to all of us who all need to take more care. |
