PolicemanPolicing the Area

I very much welcome the apparent change of heart of the Labour Government about the impact of bureaucracy on the effectiveness of the police.

Sir Ronny Flanagan’s report has made it clear that the single biggest impediment to effective policing is the massive waste of time that form filling creates in a police officer’s day.

The Conservatives have been campaigning for the last five years to reduce this huge burden on the police force and we are delighted that the Government has finally woken up to the issue.

The problem though goes deeper than this.  The imposition of national targets on the police massively skews the priorities of forces across the country.  Those in charge are often hamstrung, knowing full well what local people regard as priorities (like anti-social behaviour) but unable to address the issues as they would wish because resource has to be directed elsewhere because of nationally imposed guidelines.

The Conservative Party has made it clear that on taking Government, local police chiefs will be elected by local people to address those issues they see as priorities.  Coupled with this, there will be a bonfire of nationally imposed targets.

Only if this happens will we truly see local policing reflecting local people’s concerns.
